• To assess how the quality of palliative care and end-of-life care in Flanders can be improved
• To test and improve existing evaluation tools for palliative care and end-of-life care
• To evaluate societal changes in end-of-life care and end-of-life decision-making in Flanders

The valorisation goals

1. Develop and test new intervention tools to improve quality of palliative and end-of-life care

• Guidelines on

Prevention of unnecessary hospitalisations in the last phase of life
Timely recognition of palliative needs by GPs
Timely recognition of palliative needs in care homes
Communication at the end of life

• A Dutch language handbook on palliative care in end stage dementia patients
• Training on communication at the end of life

2. Test, improve and implement existing evaluation tools for palliative and end-of-life care that will be tested and adapted to the health care context in Flanders

• The InterRAI instruments to evaluate the quality of end-of-life care in care homes
• The Liverpool Care Pathway to evaluate the quality of end-of-life care in acute geriatric hospital wards
• A set of quality indicators to evaluate quality of palliative care in different settings
