‘Known Unknowns and Unknown Unknowns’: Eight lessons from a feasibility cluster RCT of the hospital-based intervention to serve patients whose situations are clinically uncertain
Clinical uncertainty is common in health care and some might suggest healthcare professionals have antibodies to it. However, we know that when it is present it has the potential to impact on patients’ and their families’ experiences and outcomes of care. Uncertainty also affects health professionals and is associated with moral injury, depression and burnout. In this presentation, I will critically examine the different faces of uncertainty and then proceed to explain a recent hospital-based intervention (the AMBER care bundle) to serve patients who reside in this ‘grey zone’. I will then recount eight lessons we discovered from a cluster randomized controlled trial to examine its potential benefits and harms.
This webinar is presented by Jonathan Koffman, professor of palliative care at the Wolfson Palliative Care Research Centre at Hull York Medical School. Prior to this, he was Reader in Palliative Care at the Cicely Saunders Institute, King’s College London. He has research interest in clinical uncertainty, advance care planning, the development and evaluation of complex interventions and equity, particularly in relation to minoritised communities.

In this three-monthly webinar in palliative and end-of-life care, the VUB-UGent End-of-Life Care Research Group and the Public Health at the End of Life Research Group of the Amsterdam UMC invite experienced national and international speakers to present health services, public health and clinical research that uses innovative research methods.
