Webinar series in Palliative and End-of-Life Care Research
During this webinar, Prof. Rietjens, Dr. Pannunzio and Dr. Jung, founders of the Delft Design for Care Transitions Lab, will describe what design and design research is, and give examples of how it can be leveraged in palliative care. The presentation will touch upon core design principles such as human-centeredness, system approaches and iterative ways of working. Illustrations of specific projects with design methods, such as journey mapping, system mapping, speculative design, and care experience assessment will be given, and their relevance to palliative care research will be discussed. Also, the potential of the advancement of some of these methods using AI technology will be presented. The presentation will conclude with an introduction to the Care Transitions Lab, together with its plans and ambitions in the domain of design research in palliative care.
Judith Rietjens is Medical Delta Professor of Design for Public Health at Delft University of Technology and Erasmus MC. She combines public health, design research, and social science to advance person-centred care within complex healthcare systems. She coordinates the EU-funded 4D PICTURE project, which develops data-driven decision-support tools in oncology across Europe.
Valeria Pannunzio is Assistant Professor of Health Systems Design at TU Delft’s Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering. Her work focuses on designing, implementing, and scaling digital health interventions, as well as evaluating healthcare system resilience. She previously worked as a Service Designer at Philips Experience Design and as a Research Associate at the Cambridge Public Health Centre.
Jiwon Jung is Assistant Professor of Data-Enabled Design Methods for Digital Health at TU Delft and a scientific researcher in Erasmus MC’s Department of Surgery. Trained as an industrial design engineer, she studies healthcare’s digital transformation by integrating design methods, AI, and clinical practice. She collaborates with hospital, industry, and academic partners to create more humancentred and future-ready healthcare systems.
