From cure to care

Abstract project
Patients often only come in contact with palliative care experts when their life expectancy is reduced to the last few weeks. This late onset of palliative care partly results from insufficient knowledge, competences and self-efficacy of care providers.
To tackle this problem, the Palliative Care Lectorate of Howest Nursing and the End-of-Life Care Research Group joined forces. The project “From cure to care”, submitted for the call “TETRA Care and Health”, was financed by the Flemish Agency for Innovation and Enterpreneurship. Together with the primary target groups of this two-year implementation project, the Flemish palliative care networks and ZorgConnect, are collaborating with Mintus and Sint Bernardus. They are committed to developing innovative training materials and coaching pathways to support care providers in nursing homes and the home care sector in acquiring a palliative care attitude. By improving their skills in communication, advance care planning, and addressing the holistic needs of patients and their families, they will be better prepared to provide the timely palliative care that everyone is entitled to.
The research projects VZP+ and PACE form the scientific basis for this implementation project.
