Biography
MD, PhD - Geriatrician
Professor Nele Van Den Noortgate, MD, PhD is head of the geriatric department at the University Hospital Ghent and senior lecturer in geriatric medicine at the University Ghent. She is also trained physician in Palliative Care Medicine, secretary of the Palliative Care Interest Group of the EUGMS, member of the EAPC-EUGMS-Maruzza foundation task force concerning palliative care for the older people and president of the working group ‘palliative care in geriatric medicine’ of the Flanders Federation for Palliative Care. Her PhD focust on the outcome of older patients with acute renal failure and the role of prognostic indices. She is building up a multidisciplinary research team focusing on end of life care in the older hospitalized population, which has been focusing on non-treatment decisions, advance care planning and moral distress by health care professionals. As member of the executive board of the European Academy for Medicine of ageing, she is teaching principles of palliative care to many European geriatricians.
