SUMMARY OF THE DISSERTATION
Although the end of life has gained significant importance over the past decades, few empirical data have been gathered on the circumstances surrounding death in many countries. In this dissertation, several important aspects of the final three months of life of patients dying in Belgium are described. The main research questions are: Where are people cared for in the final three months of life and what type of end-of-life care is provided in Belgium? How do euthanasia and other medical end-of-life decisions vary according to cause of death, language community and palliative care delivered in the last phase of life?
